Brian d'Arcy James, né le 29 juin 1968 Saginaw, dans le Michigan, est un acteur et musicien américain.
Sa mère, Marie Kelly, est libraire, et son père, Thomas F., avocat. Il a deux sœurs : Kate et Anne et un frère, Andrew.
Son grand-père, Harry F. Kelly, était un ancien gouverneur du Michigan, et on a pu apercevoir son oncle, Brian Kelly, dans la série Flipper.
Il est diplômé de la Northwestern University’s School of Communication.
Il fait ses débuts sur les planches : à Broadway, mais aussi dans des pièces indépendantes, comme The Good Thied pour laquelle il reçoit un Obie Award en 2011. L'année suivante, il est nominé aux Tony Awards pour son rôle dans la production musicale de Broadway : Sweet Smell of Success.
En 2004, Brian sort un album musical de Noël, « Christmas Eve to Christmas Morn ».
Après quelques apparitions mineures dans des productions, il obtient le rôle phare dans Shrek : The Musical et gagne un Tony Award et un Drama Desk Award pour ce rôle.
Le 19 juillet 2010, James joue devant le Président Barack Obama et son épouse lors de la soirée évènement « A Broadway Celebration : In Performance », à la Maison Blanche. En 2011, il apparaît en tant que guest-star dans Person of Interest,
Il rejoint ensuite le casting de Smash, dans le rôle de Frank Houston, de 2012 à 2013. Le 3 juin 2012, il co-présente les 57ème Drama Desk Awards.
En 2015, on peut l'apercevoir dans le film Spotlight ainsi que dans un épisode de Mozart in the Jungle, où il incarne Beethoven.
Sa carrière prend un nouveau tournant en 2017 : on le retrouve dans la série à succès 13 Reasons Why dans le rôle de Andy Baker, le père de l'héroine, mais également dans plusieurs films comme Le Grand Jeu, The Secret Man ou encore 1922.
En 2018 , il est annoncé dans trois productions, dont le nouveau film de Damien Chazelle, First Man, au côté de Ryan Gosling qui sortira en octobre 2018.
