Eric (Anthony) Roberts, né le 18 avril 1956 à Biloxi dans le Mississippi, est un producteur et acteur américain.

Enfance

Betty Lou Bredemus et Walter Grady Roberts ont 3 enfants, Eric, l’aîné et 2 petites filles, Lisa et la plus jeune, Julia ; tous les trois deviendront acteurs,
Acteurs et écrivains tous les deux, ils dirigent une école de théâtre pour enfants à Decatur en Georgie et c’est là que les enfants grandissent.
Quand ses parents divorcent en 1971, Eric reste avec son père à Atlanta alors que ses sœurs partent avec leur mère pour une autre ville de Georgie, Smyrna.

Eric débute sur les planches à l’âge de 5 ans dans la troupe de théâtre fondée par son père :The Actors and Writers Workshop.
Il effectue ses études secondaires à la Henry W. Gradyr Hight School ; il part ensuite pour Londres pour étudier à la Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts et quand il revient aux Etats Unis, il continue ses études à l’American Academy à New York.

Carrière

Il débute en 1964, dans une série télévisée : Another World ; ses prestations dans des films et dans des séries vont donc se suivre et en 1984, il reçoit un prix pour son interprétation dans le film tourné l’année précédente : Star 80.
L’année suivante, il est primé pour son rôle dans le film : Runaway Train.
En 1990, il obtient un rôle récurrent dans la série : Vendetta : Secrets of a Mafia Bride. 
Ensuite, il tourne, il tourne avec Richard Gere, avec Sylvester Stallone, avec Sharon Stone, avec Alec Balwin, avec Isabella Rosselini ou avec Jon Voight ; en 1996, il retrouve un personnage récurent dans la série : C-16.
Il a désormais des rôles principaux mais dans des films plutôt de "série B" même s’il croise Melanie Griffith ou Ron Perlman sur les plateaux.
A partir des années 2000, il travaille beaucoup plus pour la télévision, des films et des séries mais aussi des doublages et il participe à des clips vidéos de chanteur(euse)s célèbres comme Mariah Carey ou Rihanna ou Enrique Iglesias.
En 2007, il obtient un rôle récurrent dans la série : Heroes, de même 2 ans plus tard dans la série : Crash.

La décennie suivante démarre avec le personnage de Vince Abrams dans la série : Les Feux de l’amour et en 2012, il reçoit un prix pour son rôle de Sénateur dans le film : Silver Case.
A partir de ce moment-là, il retrouve le cinéma, les têtes d’affiche et les comédiens  "famous" comme Sharon Stone ou Joaquin Phenix ou Owen Wilson, ainsi que des récompenses pour des premiers rôles ou pour des rôles secondaires.
Le succès revient et il est primé chaque année pour différents films jusqu’en 2019, où il reçoit plusieurs prix pour son interprétation de Mathew Smith dans le film: Prescience.

Principalement acteur de soutien, mais avec beaucoup de talent et de travail, la carrière d'Eric Roberts  s’étend sur plus d’une quarantaine d’années et il est crédité de 586 participations dans des productions diverses au cinéma et à la télévision, il est d’ailleurs devenu une légende hollywoodienne même si la presque totalité de son travail n’a pas traversé l’Atlantique.
Il est le seul acteur américain à avoir été présent aussi bien dans des blockbusters que dans des films indépendants, des films d’étudiants ou des courts métrages ; à la télévision, il est présent dans des films et des séries mais il prête aussi sa voix dans des films ou séries d’animation et dans des Jeux Video ou dans des documentaires mais aussi dans un Audiobook.

Pendant cette longue période, Eric Roberts a travaillé dans 17 pays différents et il lui est arrivé certaines années de tourner dans plusieurs dizaines de production ; outre ses nombreux prix, il a été nommé près d’une vingtaine de fois dont une fois aux Oscars au tout début de sa carrière pour le film : Runaway Train et 3 fois aux Golden Globes.

Vie privée

En 1991, Eric Roberts et sa girl friend Kelly Cunningham accueillent une petite fille, Emma Rose, mais l’année suivante Eric Roberts épouse l’actrice et directrice de casting Eliza Rayfiel.
Ils vivent depuis à Los Angeles entourés de leurs 5 chats.

Anecdotes

En 1987, il est arrêté et emprisonné quelques heures à cause de ses addictions à diverses drogues. 

En 1995, il est de nouveau arrêté, cette fois, il avait brutalisé sa femme sous l’emprise de l’alcool ; dès lors, il annonce publiquement renoncer aux drogues sous toutes les formes.

A la suite des ces malheureux évènements, sa sœur avait cessé toutes relations mais en 2004, lors de la naissance de ses jumeaux, Julia Roberts se réconcilie avec lui.

Défenseur du droit des animaux, Eric Roberts est végétalien.
