Peter Coyote (de son vrai nom Cohon), né le 10 octobre 1941 à New-York, est un acteur américain.
Il est le fils de Ruth et Morris Cohon, un banquier. Il a grandi dans le New Jersey.
Peter a été dîplomé au Dwight- Englewood School en 1960. Il a ensuite étudié au lycée de Grinnell. En 1964, il est diplômé en littérature anglaise. Il obtient ensuite une maîtrise à l'université de San Francisco. C'est là-bas qu'il rejoint une troupe de théâtre: San Francisco Mime Troupe.
Sa passion pour le jeu débute donc avec la troupe San Francisco Mime Troupe. Polyvalent, il écrit, dirige et joue sa première pièce The Minstrel Show et Civil Rights. L'année suivante, il joue dans une pièce intitulée Olive Pits. Il remporte sa première récompense de la part du New York's Village Voice.
De 1975 à 1983 Peter est membre du California State ARts Council, une agence qui s'occupe de l'Art en générale. Il en devient même le président. Plus tard, il obtient un rôle dans True West.
Au début des années 80, il fait du doublage pour la publicité, le cinéma mais aussi des documentaires.
Sa carrière se poursuit dans le cinéma où il enchaîne les films : Unforgettable en 1996, Sphere en 1998, Erin Brockovich en 2000, Femme fatale en 2002. En parallèle il apparaît dans de nombreuses séries télévisées, notamment dans Les 4400, mais aussi dans Commander in chief et The inside.
Il est également écrivain. Il a publié le livre Sleeping Where I Fall en 1999 et le livre The Rainman's Third Cure: An Irregular Education en 2015. Son troisième livre, Unmasking Your True Self (The Lone Ranger and Tonto Meet the Buddha), sera publié en 2021. Il publiera également un recueil de poésie, The Tongue of a Crow.
Il est marié à Stefanie Pleet depuis 1998. Entre 1975 et 1998, il était marié à Marilyn McCann avec qui il a eu un fils et une fille.
