Russell Tovey, né le 14 novembre 1981, est un acteur anglais.
Russell Tovey naît le 14 novembre 1981 à Billericay dans le comté d’Essex en Angleterre. Enfant, il se passionne pour l’archéologie jusqu’au jour où des films comme Le cercle des poètes disparus et Les Goonies l’inspirent à devenir acteur. Il rejoint alors un club de théâtre local où il est repéré par un agent. Il obtient son premier rôle professionnel à l’âge de 11 ans.
A l’âge de 16 ans, il quitte le lycée pour rejoindre un programme des arts de la scène au Barking College. Il est renvoyé un an plus tard après avoir refusé un rôle dans la pièce de l’école à la faveur d’un rôle professionnel.
Il débute sa carrière très jeune, dès 1994, dans la série Mud.
En 2004, il est choisi pour le rôle de Rudge dans la pièce de Alan Bennett, The History Boys, au Royal National Theatre ainsi que sur les tournées à Broadway, Sydney, Wellington et à Hong Kong. Il a également joué le rôle dans l'adaptation radio et cinématographique. Il possède une très longue carrière sur les planches, sur lesquelles il a commencé en 2000 : il a notamment joué dans une adaptation d'Henri V, et une autre de la BD Tintin, où il incarnait celui-ci.
Il enchaine longtemps les rôles secondaires dans des séries et téléfilms, jusqu'en 2007 où il joue le rôle du producteur gay Rob dans la série Annually retentive, sur BBC Three. La même année, il fait une apparition dans la comédie Gavin & Stacey. Il incarne aussi pour la première fois Alonso Frame dans Doctor Who, un personnage qu'il rejoue en 2010 dans l'épisode final de David Tennant, puis en 2017 dans un épisode audio.
Il enchaine l'année suivante avec La petite Dorritt, où se retrouvent de nombreux acteurs principaux du whoniverse. C'est également en 2008 qu'il est engagé pour tenir l'un des rôles principaux de la série Being Human, la confrérie de l'étrange, et ce jusqu'en 2012. En parallèle, il tient le rôle de Steve dans Him &her. Il devient ensuite Karl Lyndhurst dans la série The job lot, de 2013 à 2015. Tout en enchainant les films, il joue pendant de 2014 à 2015 ans dans Looking, puis Banished.
En parallèle de films, il commence à incarner Harry Doyle dans Quantico, un personnage qu'il joue toujours. En parallèle, il joue en 2017 au National Theatre dans Angels in America. Il apparaît aussi dans Flash et Legends of Tomorrow. Il commence également à prêter sa voix au personnage de Ray dans la série animée Freedom Fighters: The Ray. En 2018, il joue également dans Shane the chef.
