The Make Out Place

Zoey Building
Zoey : Hi, Mo. Morning. Quick question. Do you always have to play and sing your music quite that loud?
Mo : Well, how else am I supposed to listen to Wham!? Their songs demand a certain level of participation and volume.
Zoey : It's just that I have a huge day at work today, and that sound booming through my walls wasn't really the best way to start it. Know what I mean? Why are you up so early, anyway?
Mo : Oh, I didn't go to bed. At midnight, I had this idea for a whole line of caftans, and, you know, when inspiration strikes… Hey, what music are you listening to? I'm happy to take requests for the next time.
Zoey : Sorry. You wouldn't know the band.
Voice : On today's "Analog Dialogue," we have M.I.T. Fellow and robotics specialist, Dr. Grace Simmons Hartley, discussing her...

Coffee
Max : So, you ready for this?
Zoey : I think so. I mean, I do have a pounding headache and a teeny bit of vomit in the back of my throat, but, like, in a good way.
Max : Okay.
Zoey : I just really don't want to screw this up.
Woman : Next!
Zoey : I will have a nonfat latte.
Max : And I'll have a coffee, black. Keeping it lean for the ladies.
Zoey : It actually says that on his dating profile.
Max : It does. I still don't think it's right for Joan to force us all to go after this promotion. We're not all management material, and I'm fine with that.
Zoey : I'm not. I've been a coder long enough. I need to expand my horizons.
Max : Ooh, that's good. And then you should tell her how you crushed it designing the interface for our new photo-sharing app.
Zoey : Except that was really more of a group effort.
Max : No, it was not a group effort. It was literally all you. Now is not the time to be modest. Joan would be lucky to have you managing the team, but you're gonna have to convince her.

SPRQ Point
Max : Just don't let her rattle you. Stay confident. Try to compliment her a little bit, because let's face it, the woman's a narcissist.
Zoey : All very good and thorough advice.
Simon : Hey.
Zoey : Howdy.
Max : Did you just say, "Howdy," to the new guy?
Zoey : That, I did. I don't know why we need to keep reliving it.
Max : Why don't you just talk to him? I'm sure he's perfectly nice.
Zoey : I'm sure he is, too, but I have a long history of… What do you call my past relationships again?
Max : Unnecessarily complicated, exhausting for everybody, the opposite of good.
Zoey : Yeah, those things. Which is why, this time, I'm gonna just take things slow and wait for the right in. How does she look? Good mood or bad mood?
Max : Uh, I'm gonna say all the moods. Your guess is as good as mine. Okay. Okay, look at me. This is it. Work your magic. Feel the glory. In it to win it. I don't know why I'm nervous.

Joan : So, Zoey, tell me why you think you're manager of engineering material.
Zoey : Great question, Joan. To start with, I think that I proved my programming skills when I helped design the interface for our photo-sharing app.
Joan : Okay, but how much of your work personally contributed to that project?
Zoey : You want, like, a percentage?
Joan : No, I want a latte. Yes, I want to know how significant you feel your contribution was in terms of the end results.
Zoey : Well, I mean, it was definitely a group effort, but if I had to give you a concrete number, I guess I would say... six.
Joan : Six?
Zoey : ... ty...
Joan : 60?
Zoey : ... four?
Joan : 64%?
Zoey : Correct.
Joan : Technical accomplishments aside, what makes you think you would be a good manager? Are you an effective communicator? Do you think you can get others to follow your lead? Are you comfortable being the bad guy?
Zoey : Well, I'm not really comfortable with anything. That's why I became a coder. But that doesn't mean I couldn't be a great manager if given the chance. What are you typing?
Joan : My Pilates instructor. Can't be late again, Jeff.

Zoey : Leif, you've been summoned.
Leif : How'd you do?
Zoey : I'm gonna go out on a limb and say not well.
Tobin : Really? I thought you two would be doing each other's nails and buying matching tote bags off Etsy in there.
Leif : Dude, come on. Not cool.
Tobin : What? What?
Max : I'm sorry.
Zoey : Yeah, me, too. I was really hoping I'd have some good news to tell my father.

Clarke House
David : All right, who wants some freshly delivered, slightly cold, mediocre pizza?
Mom? Zoey?
Maggie : Maybe later.
David : All right. Well, more for me.
Zoey : Mom, let me take over. You need a break.
Maggie : No, that's not why we have you guys here. We just like the company.
Zoey : Okay. Well, I can still feed Dad soup.
Maggie : Yes, but your father doesn't want to burden you with any of this stuff.
Zoey : How do you know? He can't speak.
Maggie : Well, I don't know for sure, but I have been married to the man for 40 years, so I have a pretty good idea.
Zoey : Can we maybe open a window or something?
David : Why? You want Dad to catch a cold on top of everything else?
Zoey : Yeah, that's exactly what I want for him.
Maggie : Guys.
Zoey : He just always loved being outside, and I don't know. I thought maybe a little fresh air...
David : Might give him pneumonia? He's fine, Zoey.

Maggie : What's the matter, sweetie? You okay?
Zoey : Yeah, I've just been getting headaches and maybe a little bit of eye pain lately. I'm sure it's nothing.
Maggie : Oh, so you're not thinking that you have what your father has?
Zoey : I mean, it might have crossed my mind once or twice.
Maggie : He didn't show symptoms until about a year ago, and it started with balance issues and speech problems, not stress headaches. But, if you're really worried, go see a doctor, and get an MRI.
Zoey : No way. You know how claustrophobic I am.
Maggie : Well, so is your father, and he's had seven since January. Three more, we get a set of steak knives. They're not that scary.

Hospital
Zoey : Are you sure this isn't an elaborate teleportation device that's going to take me to some parallel universe?
Doctor : Depends. Where do you want to go?
Zoey : Um, I'm gonna vote for anywhere but here.
Doctor : Uh, now, you're gonna hear some banging, uh, but you can listen to music if you like. We've got Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music, Google Play.
Zoey : Doesn't matter. Play anything. I just want to get this over with.
Doctor : Here we go.
Zoey : Uh, oh. Mm, I think I was hoping for something a little bit more relaxing. Do you have anything that's not as...
Doctor : Oh, God, an earthquake.
Zoey : Is this supposed to be happening?!

Street
Zoey : Hey, did you and Dad feel that earthquake? Are you guys all right?

Clarke House
Maggie : Oh, we're fine. The house shook a little bit. I think your dad thought he was on a roller coaster. Are you okay?

Street
Zoey : The craziest thing just happened to me. I was in the middle of the MRI, and...
Maggie : Zoey? Zoey?
Zoey : Uh, were you just singing to me?
Woman : No. Why?
Zoey : That sounds really sad.
Woman : What are you talking about?
Zoey : What are you talking about?
Maggie : Zoey?
Zoey : Uh, yeah, yeah. I'm here. I'm sorry. I'm just, um, feeling a little strange right now.

Clarke House
Maggie : Well, take the rest of the day off. Really, go home. You need to take care of yourself.

Street
Zoey : What the...

Zoey Appartment
Zoey : Ooh.

Zoey Building
Mo : Eh...
Zoey : Why are you singing right now?
Mo : Because I love that song, and it feels good to sing it.
Zoey : So you weren't just singing that to me specifically?
Mo : Why would I be singing to you? You don't even like me.
Zoey : That's never been officially documented.
Mo : Zoey, are you okay? Do you need some...
Zoey : Ahh! Don't say the word "help." I'm begging you.
Mo : Please, come on in. Can I get you anything? Water? Vodka? Xanax?
Zoey : Okay, maybe I do need help, because I think I'm going crazy.
Mo : Did you want to tell me about it?
Zoey : People are singing to me, Mo. An entire neighborhood just sang a whole Beatles song to me.
Mo : Quick question. Did you recently imbibe or ingest anything that came from a "medicinal" type shop?
Zoey : No. All I know is that, one second, I'm getting an MRI, and, the next second...
Mo : Complete strangers are singing John Lennon to you.
Zoey : Some to me, some to themselves, almost as if they were singing what they were all thinking out loud collectively as a people. Does that make sense?
Mo : No, but I'm an open-minded person. I'm willing to roll with this. Maybe you're operating on a higher plane than the rest of us. Maybe you're getting a special glimpse into other people's heads.
Zoey : If that's the case, then why aren't you singing to me right now?
Mo : Child, I'm completely baked. Ain't nothing going on in my head right now.
Zoey : You know what? Forget it. Forget I said any of this. I shouldn't have told you. I shouldn't tell anyone. Keeping my mouth shut from now on, or else rumors get started, and then I become the weird music girl on top of everything else, and I've got enough problems without that, thank you very much.
Mo : Hey, hey, hey, hey. I am really sorry that you got so freaked out, okay? And let me know if it ever happens again, because this is the first thing that I find remotely interesting about you.

SPRQ Point
Simon : Here we go.
Max : Look at him. I don't think I've ever been as happy as that guy is at 9:30 in the morning on a Tuesday.
Zoey : He does have a certain joie de vivre, doesn't he?
Max : Have we ever had joie de vivre?
Zoey : I don't think we're really joie de vivre people.
Tobin : There you guys are. Joan is in rare form today. Come on.
Zoey : Wait, wait. What's happening?
Tobin : You mean she didn't tell you over Skinnygirl margaritas last night?
Zoey : Seriously, what is wrong with you?
Tobin : My mom left me when I was young, and my whole life has been a series of rejections from the opposite sex. Any other questions?
Max : Yes, I have many, many questions.

Joan : For those of you who don't know, we have recently discovered a bug in the health app that's supposed to launch in five days along with the new Sprq Point watch.
Leif : What's the bug doing?
Joan : It's giving inaccurate readings of people's blood pressure, most in the range of 50 over 20.
Max : That's low, isn't it?
Joan : Only if should no longer be living is low. So, I'm gonna need you guys to text your friends and your Adderall dealers and all the other entitled millennials you've been chatting with on Slack and tell them you're gonna be in for some late nights. Get to work.

Zoey : I don't think it's coming from our end. Our app code seems fine.
Leif : Must have something to do with how the watch itself is recording the data.
Zoey : I'm gonna clone its firmware repository.
Leif : I can help if you want.
Zoey : Thanks, Leif. Leif, do you hear that?
Leif : Hear what?
Zoey : You sure you don't hear that?

Club
Mo : Come on, people! Let's party like it's 1978! You actually came to my gig.
Zoey : You told me to tell you if happens again. All day, nothing, and then, out of nowhere, it happened again.
Mo : What now? A bunch of cartoon birds land on your shoulders and sing show tunes to you?
Zoey : No, this was just one person singing something so raw and painful and personal, I almost felt embarrassed listening to it. What do you think that means?
Mo : One of two things, either your powers are getting stronger, honing on specific targets, or you're losing it, in which case, I will do my civic duty and drive you to the nearest mental health clinic as soon as I'm finished making seventies night my bitch.
Zoey : I am just very, very confused. You said that I was getting a glimpse into other people's heads.
Mo : I said maybe you were, and you should really take everything I say when I'm high with a grain of salt.
Zoey : But it just doesn't make sense. The guy who was singing is handsome and happy and charming and very, very sexy, and, if your theory is correct, then he should only be singing, like, massively upbeat anthems about how totally awesome he is.
Mo : Well, maybe he's not quite as awesome as you think he is. What was he singing?
Zoey : I think it's called "Mad World."
Mo : Mm. Your boy is hurting. That song is real dark. Look, songs are all just an expression of our deepest wants and desires… Joy, pain, heartbreak, yearning, forgiveness, revenge. Good music can make you feel things you can't express in words.
Zoey : So, if I do have this... power, maybe Simon really is hurting.
Mo : And the song that he sang only to you might have been his cry for help. Hmm?

SPRQ Point
Max : I can't find anything. No memory leak, no out-of-bounds exception, not even a floating-point error. Hey, uh, not that I'm keeping tabs or anything, but that's like your fourth cup of coffee today. How late were you here last night?
Zoey : Oh, I wasn't just here. I went to this club called The Make Out Place.
Max : You went to a club?
Zoey : I'll be right back.
Max : Okay. Club. What's next, Burning Man?

Zoey : What are you leaning towards?
Simon : Tough call. Middle of the day. Do I get a sugar cereal that'll make me crash hard or something super healthy that I'll totally hate?
Zoey : These are the struggles. My dad's a huge fa… Well, was a huge fan of granola. I think I'm gonna go that route. It's kinda the best of both worlds scenario.
Simon : What made your dad turn on granola? Did granola hurt him in some way? Rob his house? Make out with his lady?
Zoey : No. He just, uh, can't really swallow anymore, because he's dying. Well, slowly dying of this rare neurological disease, and each week, he, like, loses another ability, therefore, big chunks of granola would just cause him to choke. So, that's a whole lot of TMI I just spewed at you.
Simon : I-I'm sorry. I had no idea.
Zoey : Why would you? We're strangers. There's no way you could know that, just like there's no way I could know if you were secretly miserable or something. I mean, you seem happy, but who knows what other people are really thinking, right? Anyway, I'm Zoey. I don't know if you know that, and, if you want to forget this entire interaction ever happened, totally get it.
Simon : Zoey… we can do better than cereal. You wanna take a walk?
Zoey : Yeah.

Street
Zoey : You were right. This was the best cheesecake I've ever had.
Simon : Uh-uh, cheesequake.
Zoey : Cheesequake.
Simon : Ah.
Zoey : Still, isn't it in bad taste for a bakery to capitalize off natural disasters with a moderately clever pun?
Simon : Oh, definitely in bad taste, but, when they're as good as these were… Unh... do we really care?
Zoey : No.
Simon : Hmm. So, are you usually that honest about your dad and his condition?
Zoey : Not so much. I've found, in general, death and dying tend not to be the best conversation starters.
Simon : Still, are you angry? Are you crying all the time? What's that whole process like for you?
Zoey : Why are you asking? Is one of your parents dying, too? It's nothing to be ashamed of.
Simon : If I show you something, can you promise to keep it only between us? This is a photo of my dad and I when I was a kid. I've been carrying it everywhere I go lately.
Zoey : And you don't want others to know about this, because...
Simon : He killed himself, Zoey. Five months ago. Looking at this photo is the only thing that makes me feel better. And I know what you're going through sucks, but it's… it's way worse when they're gone. I mean, your dad's still here. You gotta take advantage of that. Talk to him. Hold his hand. Do things with him. 'Cause, when he's gone, well, it's… Uh, this is the only thing that I could hold on to.
Zoey : I'm so sorry. Are you talking to anyone about this?
Simon : Other than you? No. I've become a real expert at bottling my shame and pain and hiding it from the world.
Zoey : Listen, I'm not an expert on this or anything, but you can't just keep it in. We live in a very, very mad world, Simon, but if you open up and express what you're feeling to others, well, I mean, it's gotta be better than what you're doing now. Living your whole life in your head, like this prison my dad's now in, that's… torture.
Simon : You're amazing. It's like you know exactly what's going on inside my brain. It's a real miracle we found each other, Zoey.
Zoey : Yeah. Such a miracle.

Clarke House
Zoey : These are all the pills Dad's taking?
Maggie : Yes. I had to make a spreadsheet just to keep track, which pill, which hour. I-I could do a whole PowerPoint presentation on this right now. You would be very impressed.
Zoey : I'm just impressed you know the term "PowerPoint." Well, what do they all do?
Maggie : Um, okay, well, this one helped me sleep. This one made me forget all my problems for about five hours, and this one...
Zoey : Mom, you've tried them?
Maggie : No. Yes. Some of them.
Zoey : That is so unlike you.
Maggie : I know. I just… I wanted to feel what your dad was feeling. That's all. So, what is new with you?
Zoey : Oh, nothing much. Well, I left the office in the middle of a crisis to spend time with this coworker I have a massive crush on. Then I used information I shouldn't have even known about him to form this bond like some sort of adorable psycho.
Maggie : That is so unlike you.
Zoey : I just haven't been myself lately, and I'm worried about you and Dad all the time, and… What? What did I say?
Maggie : No, nothing. It's not you. This is all just… very overwhelming. I mean, six months ago, Dad was… he was okay. You know, we could still communicate with each other, and now I don't know what's going on in his head, how much he's processing, if he's processing. I should have been the one this happened to.
Zoey : Don't say that.
Maggie : No, it is true. I mean, your dad was always better than me at handling emergencies, all the… emotional stuff, and we all know it.
Zoey : Okay, if that's the case, then maybe we should ask him how to handle our current situation.
Maggie : I think we're just gonna have to stumble through it together.
Zoey and Maggie : The blind leading the blind.
Zoey : Jinx.
Maggie : No take-backs.

SPRQ Point
Zoey : If you had the power to know what was going on in other people's heads, do you think you'd feel guilty?
Max : No, I think I'd just get my feelings hurt a lot more often.
Simon : There she is, my favorite mind-reader.
Zoey : That's me… Zo-stradamus.
Simon : I just wanted to say thank you again for our talk yesterday, and I'm here for you, too, if you ever need someone to lean on. I mean that.
Zoey : Great. Sounds good. Will definitely take you up on that. You know what? I forgot a pencil at my desk, so I have to excuse myself.
Max : Just one… Uh, mind blown. So many questions. How did that happen? What? And did you really make contact without telling me?
Zoey : We might have bonded on a deep, emotional level.
Joan : Zoey, got a minute?
Zoey : Mm-hmm.
Max : Hi, Joan.

Joan : I'm going to be uncharacteristically honest with you right now. Don't get used to it. You're one of the best programmers we have, which is why it's between you and one other person for this job.
Zoey : It is? That's...
Joan : Meaningless, unless I pick you. This is a big opportunity. Why did you leave work yesterday, and why are you so distracted all of a sudden?
Zoey : You noticed that?
Joan : I notice everything. Maybe you don't want this promotion.
Zoey : No. Uh, I just have a lot going on.
Joan : That wasn't me looking for an answer. That was me telling you to get back to your desk and focus.
Zoey : Okay.

Tobin : Hey. So what was that all about?
Zoey : Nothing. She was just...
Leif : Was she giving you a clue about the bug? Does it have to do with our software or the watch's firmware? At least tell us that much.
Zoey : She didn't say anything.
Tobin : Are you sure? 'Cause it kinda seemed like she was giving you some inside information. You know what I mean? Leaning in, breaking the glass ceiling. A woman's place is in the house… and the Senate. What up?
Leif : Okay, dude, come on. You gotta stop trying to turn this into, like, an us-versus-her thing. Okay? We're all in this together.
Tobin : Fine.
Leif : Look, so, Zoey, no matter what happened, whether Joan gave you some sort of special advantage or not, you should know that...
Zoey : Oh, good. A dance break. I so wish I could tell HR about this. I'm sorry. Whether she gave me some advantage or not, what?
Leif : I'm rooting for you. That's all.
Zoey : Glad to hear it.
Leif : Yeah.

Store
Zoey : Two cheesequakes, please. Thank you.
Simon : Back so soon? I warned you. Those things are addictive.
Zoey : Hi. I was just about to call you.
Simon : Is everything okay?
Zoey : Not really. I was hoping I could take you up on that whole leaning on each other thing. Is right now a bad time?
Jessica : Babe, there you are. I hope you're stopping him from buying any more of those things. He's so obsessed. He wants them to be one of the dessert options at the wedding.
Zoey : The wedding?
Simon : This is my fiancée, Jessica.
Jessica : Hi.
Simon : Uh, Zoey and I work with each other at Sprq Point.
Jessica : Oh.
Zoey : Not exactly work with each other. I'm just a coder, while your man's a big old, fancy suit guy.
Simon : We were just gonna go grab a bite. Do you want to join, or...
Zoey : Oh, no, no, that's okay. I can't. Maybe another time. Really nice to meet you. Have fun.
Jessica : She's so sweet.

Clarke House
Zoey : Hey, Dad. I'm, uh, going through a little bit of a rough patch… and could really use your help. I'm flailing at work. I just found out a guy I like is engaged, and I am either going totally nuts, or I suddenly can hear people's innermost thoughts as big musical numbers. Don't ask. I just feel like everyone's against me. I'm losing my mind. And the one person who… seemed to always make me feel better in times like this… isn't really here anymore… which is not fair. 'Cause I really need you, so could you just… like, snap out of this or make it all go away or something? 'Cause I don't know who I am or what I'm doing anymore.

Zoey : Dad is processing everything we're saying! He's still with us.
Maggie : How do you know?
David : What are you talking about?
Zoey : You're gonna have to trust me on this one, okay? And, also, we're taking him sailing.
Maggie : Oh, Zoey, that's sweet, but I don't know if that's such a good idea.
David : Yeah, why would we take Dad?
Zoey : Stop! He's always loved going outside, and this is going to make him happy. Okay? So I'm gonna call the boat rental place, and all you have to do is clear your Sunday, bring a warm jacket, and enjoy the day.

SPRQ Point
Simon : See? That's the way to do it.
Zoey : Right?
Simon : So, I did what you said. Last night, I told Jessica everything that I've been feeling lately, kinda let it pour out of me.
Zoey : How'd it go?
Simon : Well, it definitely felt good to say it out loud, and I guess maybe it gave her more clarity on how my dad's death has been affecting me lately, so that part was helpful.
Zoey : But?
Simon : I don't think she got it. You know? Like, she hasn't had any death, or real tragedy in her life, so I'm not sure she really, really relates, at least not the way you do. You gave me good advice. It's just… hard when the two sides aren't connecting. And sometimes it feels like we're in totally separate worlds, not communicating, not even on the same bandwidth. It's just...
Zoey : Wait. Will you excuse me, Simon?
Simon : Sure.
Zoey : It's not the watch or the app. It's both. That 50-over-20 number isn't a reading. It's our default value we plugged in when we were programming it. The app and the watch aren't even talking to each other. They're not communicating. Tobin, go through the watch's firmware repository, and revert any code you or any of the other guys touched while looking for the bug.
Tobin : Uh, why should I listen to you?
Zoey : If the watch launches with faulty software, it's going to reflect badly on all of us. Leif, you and the other coders, start preparing a build to ship and wait for my final push.
Tobin : Two more hours, and I would've gotten it. Just saying.

Joan : Well, Zoey, you solved the bug.
Zoey : I did.
Joan : So I'm gonna ask you one more time. Why do you think you're manager of engineering material?
Zoey : Because I am the best coder here. I really want the job, and I know that I have the power and the ability to be a great leader.

Outside
Maggie : You really think it's okay for him to go out on the water like this?
Zoey : We can't keep shielding him from the world. We should be doing the opposite.
Maggie : Well, I hear you. I'm just...
Zoey : Mom.
Maggie : Concerned...
Zoey : He's happy right now. Believe me. There's gonna be good days and bad days, remember? Let's chalk this up to one of the good ones.
Maggie : Being out here, it brings back a lot of nice old family memories, doesn't it, darling?

SPRQ Point
Tobin : Hey, congrats on the promotion. That is awesome.
Leif : Yeah, congrats. Now I have two female bosses. It's like I'm working at Goop.
Simon : Morning.
Zoey : Morning.
Max : There she is, our new team leader. Is it weird that I'm now a little intimated by you?
Zoey : Oh, please.
Max : So, first day, how you feeling?
Zoey : Really good, actually. You know, I just want to tell you what a great friend you've been through all of this, Max. It's just been really comforting to know that I have you as, like, my rock. And crazy thing is, I haven't even told you everything that's been going on with me lately. You wouldn't believe. Are you all right? What's going on?
Max : Nothing. Nothing. It's just, last night...
Zoey : Okay, now you're singing, too. I don't think I know this one. What words are those? I'm sorry. What?
Max : What?

Mon moment préféré reste quand Lief chante All I Do Is Win avec la choégraphie, j'ai adoré !
