Épisode Episode 3 S02E03 - A Discovery of Witches Saison 2

Oxford, aujourd'hui

Domenico arrive sur une scène de crime. Il a un accord avec le détective qui l'a appelé en raison de la nature violente de la mort de la victime. Avant de partir, Domenico demande que le rapport post mortem lui soit envoyé.

Londres, 1590

Matthew est assis dans sa pièce cachée au grenier et prie. Ensuite, il va faire face au père Hubbard qui l'accuse d'avoir tué Tom Caldwell. Matthew explique que Cecil avait déjà décidé du sort du sorcier et qu'il souhaitait simplement lui épargner davantage de douleur. Il demande son pardon après avoir demandé celui de Dieu. Le regardant de près, Hubbard voit que cette mort pèse réellement sur Matthew affirmant même que c'est sa sorcière qui l'a changé.

A la maison, Diana et Jack sont assis à table lorsque Pierre s'approche avec une lettre de la comtesse de Pembroke. Diana lui rend visite et pendant qu'elles mènent une expérience, Mary mentionne qu'elle a entendu dire qu'elle était à la recherche d'un livre d'alchimie. Elle suggère que John Dee, l'astrologue de la reine, pourrait l'aider car il possède une bibliothèque remarquable.

Diana et Matthew vont lui rendre visite. Après avoir fait une enquête, ils sont amenés à croire que John Dee était peut-être effectivement en possession du Livre de la Vie. Mais ce n'est plus le cas : à son retour d'un voyage en Bohême, le docteur Dee a vérifié ses affaires et a remarqué que quelqu'un avait échangé ledit livre. Il soupçonne Edward Kelley resté là-bas. Apparemment, l'empereur Rudolf s'était intéressé à la fois au livre et à Kelley qui avait affirmé qu'il contenait une méthode secrète pour obtenir l'immortalité. Matthew propose d'essayer de récupérer le livre pour lui.

De retour à la maison, Diana se réveille au son de Jack en train de faire un cauchemar. Elle écoute Matthew consoler le garçon pour l'aider à se rendormir. Matthew retourne à l'étage travailler. Diana le rejoint et ils discutent de la manière de récupérer le livre ce qui semble difficile pour Matthew car l'empereur Rudolf est dangereusement imprévisible.

Le lendemain, Diana rend visite à Goody et aux autres sorcières pour son entraînement. Elles se tiennent autour de Diana en cercle et celle-ci voit des fils de lumière flotter dans l'air. Goody lui montre comment les tisseurs utilisent ces fils pour créer de nouveaux sorts et explique qu'ils doivent maintenant découvrir l'élément de Diana car chaque élément a son propre fil. Chacune des quatre sorcières qui l'entourent commande soit la terre, l'air, l'eau ou le feu. Goody ordonne à Diana de choisir le fil qui l'appelle le plus fort. Diana devient rapidement submergée et elle se débat car chaque fil qu'elle cherche à attraper lui échappe rapidement. Elle les voit tous.

Bien que Diana soit découragée, Goody essaie de lui expliquer que le premier sort est difficile pour n'importe quel tisseurs. Elle poursuit ensuite en disant qu'elle n'a jamais rencontré quelqu'un comme Diana auparavant car la plupart des sorcières ont un élément dans leur sang et ne voient donc que les fils de lumière pour cet élément particulier. Cela facilite le choix. Cependant, Diana les a tous vus parce qu'elle a les quatre éléments en elle.

Sept-Tours, aujourd'hui

Em utilise sa magie pendant que Sarah dort pour appeler Rebecca : une colonne de fumée prend brièvement la forme de son amie morte. Em lui dit que Diana a besoin d'aide. Mais la forme disparaît. Déçue, elle retourne discrètement se coucher.

Londres, 1590

Un invité inattendu est arrivé à la maison : Lord Burghley. Un de ses espions l'a bien renseigné et il est bien conscient que Diana est à la fois la femme de Matthew et une sorcière. Cecil dit à Matthew que la reine remet en question la confiance qu'elle a placée dans le vampire et s'attend à ce que lui et Diana se présentent devant elle à Whitehall le lendemain.

Matthew attend Kit dans sa maison. À son retour, il l'accuse avec colère d'avoir parlé à Cecil de Diana. Kit nie. Il part confronter Cecil exigeant de savoir qui lui a parlé de la sorcière. Il l'implore de dire à Matthew que ce n'est pas lui qui l'a trahi. Cecil lui répond que normalement, c'était à lui de lui apprendre ce genre de chose.

Le lendemain, Mary Sidney semble avoir entendu parler de la visite imminente de Diana et Matthew à la Cour parce qu'elle s'invite à la maison prête à aider : elle arrive suivie de nombreuses malles. Elle fournit à Diana une tenue appropriée pour la visite.

Lorsque Matthew et Diana approchent la reine Elizabeth, elle remarque avec dédain que le vampire a l'air fatigué et que le mariage ne lui convient pas. Matthew tente de trouver une excuse pour expliquer pourquoi il ne lui a pas encore présenté Diana mais la reine le rabroue. Elle renvoie ses gens pour parler seule avec Matthew et Diana et demande ce qu'ils voulaient à John Dee. Matthew explique qu'ils sont intéressés par un livre qu'Edward Kelley a en sa possession.

Apparemment, Edward Kelley a conduit la reine et l'empereur Rudolf à croire qu'il était capable de créer la pierre philosophale avec le livre. La reine leurs apprend avoir déjà envoyé des messagers en Bohême pour récupérer Kelley mais que l'empereur a refusé de les recevoir. Matthew déclare qu'il prouvera sa loyauté envers la reine en l'aidant dans sa recherche de la pierre philosophale et en allant récupérer l'homme et le livre. La reine satisfaite lui répond que dans ce cas, elle oublierait ses récentes erreurs.

Diana rencontre à nouveau Goody et les sorcières et elles adoptent une approche différente avec leur formation : elles lui donnent chacune un fil à la fois. Finalement, après avoir lié plusieurs fils ensemble, Diana évoque malgré elle un sorbier, un arbre qui représente le croisement entre les mondes.

Toutes les sorcières regardent avec étonnement alors que Goody confirme qu'elle est vraiment une tisseuse. Diana a hâte de continuer à apprendre mais Goody lui rappelle qu'elle doit être patiente. Alors qu'elle s'en va, Mistress Norman s'approche d'elle et lui apprend que sa magie est liée à sa relation avec Matthew et à tous les aspects de sa vie.

Plus tard, le neveu vampire de Matthew Gallowglass arrive à la maison. S'il semble heureux de le voir, la raison de sa visite est plus formelle : il transmet une lettre de Philippe. Le père de Matthew lui ordonne de retourner à Sept-Tours sous 7 jours. Diana le rassure, ils vont affronter cette épreuve, sachant que Philippe est mort à leur époque, ensemble. Pour Diana, si revoir son père après tant de temps va rouvrir de vieilles blessures cela peut aussi les guérir. Matthew ne semble pas convaincu.

Goody est bouleversée d'apprendre que Diana s'en va et lui demande de poursuivre son entraînement.

Matthew et Diana expliquent à Jack pourquoi il ne peut pas les accompagner dans leur périple qui va les conduire en France puis en Bohême. Ils lui offrent un cadeau, une paire de miniatures les représentants.

Alors qu'ils se préparent à partir pour la France, Gallowglass s'excuse auprès de Diana pour sa réticence initiale mais il a maintenant compris l'étendue de sa relation avec son oncle. Il lui dit gravement qu'elle doit être l'ancre de Matthew à Sept-Tours sinon il risque de se perdre. Il lui apprend également qu'il ne les accompagne pas sur le sol français car son père y est mort : il les attendra en Bohême.

Venise, aujourd'hui

Domenico rend visite à Gerbert toujours très contrarié par sa dernière traitrise. Il explique à Gerbert qu'un cadavre a été retrouvé et que cela semble être une fureur sanguinaire, maladie qui atteint certains vampires qui sont alors pris d'une violence irrépressible. C'est quelque chose qu'ils n'ont pas vu depuis des siècles. Domenico fait référence aux rumeurs sur la lignée infectée des Clermont mais Gerbert indique clairement qu'il a besoin de preuves concrètes. Il demande à Domenico quel est son prix pour cette négociation : celui-ci réclame Venise parce que Gerbert lui a pris la ville en premier lieu. En retour, Domenico lui donnera les moyens de détruire les Clermont.

DIANA : Conducting experiments is much more thrilling than reading about them.

MARY : Henry tells me you are searching for an old chemical book.

DIANA : Yes. It’s proving illusive.

MARY : Now add the aqua fortis. Perhaps the Queen’s astrologer can assist. His library is remarkable. I’ve read many a book.

DIANA : Thought John Dee had gone to the continent.

MARY : He has returned and is looking for patronage. Mention my name. Dr. Dee can be amenable. It seems so.

DR DEE'S HOUSE

Outside

DR DEE : Master Roydon.

MATTHEW : Dr. Dee, may I present my wife, Diana. She’s a friend of the Countess of Pembroke and shares her love of alchemy.

DR DEE : Well, any friend of the Countess is most welcome.

DIANA  : Thank you.

Inside

DIANA : I’ve heard so much about your great collection, Dr. Dee.

DR DEE : My, new scryer, Robert Ainslie. Forgive our disorder, we are overwhelmed with work. My previous scryer abandoned me in Bohemia.

DIANA : Edward Kelly.

DR DEE : Yes, a man of great talent, but unsteady temperament.

DIANA : Mmm. Sigillum Dei.

DR DEE : The designs dictated by the angels, Mistress Roydon, to aid me conversations with them.

MATTHEW : I’m going to have a hell of a time getting you out of here.

DIANA : Dr. Dee, might I browse your collection?

DR DEE : Well, as you wish.

MATTHEW : It’s my understanding, Doctor, that you had a recent visit from the Queen bestowed upon you. Was she in excellent humor?

Diana searching for the Book of Life

ROBERT AINSLIE : You seek a specific text?

DIANA : An old book of alchemy written in an unknown language.

ROBERT AINSLIE : What do you of its provenance?

DIANA : Very little. May have belonged to the magician Roger Bacon.

ROBERT AINSLIE : Dr. Dee does have such a book. Acquired from Emperor Rudolf.

DIANA : May I see it?

ROBERT AINSLIE : You can decipher the text?

DIANA : No. No. My interest is…scholarly.

With Dr Dee

DR DEE : Unfortunately, this is not the book you seek. I discovered it in my boxes on return from Bohemia. But a treasured book was missing. I believe Edward replaced it.

DIANA : Tell me about the missing book.

DR DEE : It was a rare text, larger than this one. It contained many mysteries which Edward could understand with divine assistance.

MATTHEW : Sir Kelly’s remained in Bohemia?

DR DEE : Rudolf took great interest in both him and this book. Edward said it contained a secret method for obtaining immortality.

MATTHEW : Well, perhaps I could help. If you’ll permit me to take this, I can try to put it back to where it belongs and return your book to you.

DR DEE : I would be forever in your debt. I’ll have my assistant wrap it for you, sir.

Diana alone with Matthew

DIANA : Well done. It must be Ashmole 782.

MATTHEW  : Yes.

DIANA : But how do we get it?

MATTHEW  :Your guess is as good as mine.

MATTHEW'S HOME

At night, Diana wakes up hearing Jack crying but Matthew is already calming him

MATTHEW : Shh, shh, shh. Jack, Jack, Jack, I’m here. It’s all right.What was it this time? Can you tell me?

JACK : Same as always.

MATTHEW : Ah, the tall man.

JACK : But what if it comes back?

MATTHEW : Well, then I will chase him away. You’re a part of our family now. You are safe from monsters here...Hmm. I’ll just be upstairs.

MATTHEW : Being here…Mmmm

DIANA : Oh. Come to bed.

MATTHEW : I know I had contact in Bohemia.

DIANA : Couldn’t we get the book ourselves?

MATTHEW : There are witch trials spreading all across Europe. Emperor Rudolf is dangerously unpredictable. The book might as well be on Mars.

DIANA : Is Jack okay?

MATTHEW : I believe so. I dread to think what that poor boy has been through.

DIANA : You are so good with him.

MATTHEW : I’m woefully out of practice.

DIANA : We’ve hardly had a chance to adapt to being parents.

MATTHEW : I’ve been doing what I must to keep us safe. Go to bed. You need to be well rested for tomorrow. I will be here when you wake.

They kiss

Outside, Goody is waiting for Diana

She arrives with Matthew

GOODY : She will be safe with us, Master Roydon. Word will be sent when she is finished.

DIANA : I’ll be okay.

GOODY : I have asked my gathering to join us. Their magical skill will help you train. It’s time to begin. Regard the room with your witch’s sight and tell me what you see.

DIANA : Threads of light.

GOODY : That is the warp and weft of all life in the cosmos made visible. A weaver selects… and shapes something new. That is how a weaver creates new spells. Each element has its own threads.

So, we must discover your element. I bring air. Marjorie, earth. Lizzie, water. And Catherine, fire.

KIT : Well, only that it’s ruled by a madman. Is that what’s been occupying you? The book is lost. If I were you, I’d focus your attention on matters closer to home.

MATTHEW : Do you mean Cecil? Does he know about Diana?

KIT : The fact that you are married, or that she is a witch? Lord Burghley likes to hide his true feelings beneath a cloak of deception, but he knows that you are not yourself.

GOODY'S HOUSE

GOODY : Enough. I think they are sufficiently pulverized. Casting your first spell is difficult for any weaver. You must be kinder to yourself, Diana.

DIANA : The others probably don’t even believe I am a weaver.

GOODY : They’ve never met your like before. Nor have I. Most witches have one element in their blood, and they only see the threads of those elements. So it’s easy for them to choose between them. But you saw them all.

DIANA : Why?

GOODY : I think you know.

Diana remembers when she used witch water, witch wind... witch fire

PIERRE : We have an unexpected guest, sir.

William Cecil is waiting for Matthew and Diana

DIANA : It’s an honor to meet the Queen’s Lord Treasurer.

CECIL : I’m surprised you’re so well acquainted with my station. It’s clear to me you are a stranger here, Mistress Roydon.

MATTHEW : Quite simply, Diana is not from London.

CECIL : Your newfound sympathies towards her kind explain much of your recent behavior.

DIANA : My kind are loyal to the crown, Lord Burghley, and only wish to live in peace.

CECIL : Then why keep this marriage secret from Her Majesty?

MATTHEW : We merely wished for Diana to be settled in town before presenting her at court.

CECIL : Her Majesty questions the trust she had long placed in you, Master Roydon. She expects you both at Whitehall tomorrow.

He leaves

Diana seeing Matthew upset

DIANA : I never thought I’d be so desperate not to meet Queen Elizabeth.

MATTHEW : Queen Elizabeth trusts me implicitly.William Cecil cannot change that…overnight.

KIT'S HOUSE

Matthew is waiting for Kit when he arrives

He is calm but threatening

MATTHEW : There really is no one that you won’t betray for money. I should have known. You’ve been nothing but poison since we arrived.

KIT : I have done all that I can do to help you.

MATTHEW : No, you are hellbent on driving Diana and I apart.

He explodes

MATTHEW : You told Cecil! You could have gotten her killed. Lies come sweetly to you, don’t they? What, did you think that if she was gone, everything would be as it was?

KIT : I swear Cecil did not hear of Diana from me.

Matthew shouts and becomes violent

MATTHEW : I am nothing without Diana! And if you can’t accept that…then you are no friend of mine. Stay away from her. You stay away from us both.

CECIL'S OFFICE

KIT : Get out of my way!

GUARD : His Lordship is not receiving visitors.

KIT : Who told you about Roydon’s witch?

CECIL : Nothing in London happens without my eyes on it.

KIT : You have to tell him it wasn’t me.

CECIL : But it should have been you. That’s what I pay you for.

KIT : I never would have betrayed him.

CECIL : Yes, you would. If it suited you. I have no interest in your squabbles.

Mary arrives at Matthew's home with trunks

MAN : My lady.

Inside, to Diana

MARY : I hear you are expected at court. I am here to make sure your armor is worthy of the battle to come. My wardrobe offers ample protection. This dress is a year old. Her Majesty will approve of your frugality and disregard for the whims of fashion.

She helps Diana get dressed

DIANA : That much is true.

MARY : Hmm.

WHITEHALL

Matthew and Diana are waiting

MATTHEW : The Queen will make us wait.

Diana is nervous

DIANA : I’ve often thought about what I’d ask her if I ever met her.

MATTHEW : Nothing. She will ask the questions. Keep the answers short. She’s just a person, Diana. Let her, give her what she wants and you’ll have nothing to fear.

In front of the queen

QUEEN ELISABETH : You look tired, Shadow. Marriage does not suit you.

MATTHEW : My humblest apologies for not presenting my wife at court sooner. She is a newcomer to London and required time to become acquainted with the city.

ELISABETH : Nonsense. You thought I would not find out.

MATTHEW : I would not be so naive. Your Majesty’s omniscience is the stuff of legend.

ELISABETH : I would like to speak to Master Roydon and his wife alone.

CECIL  : Your Majesty…

He leaves anyway

ELISABETH : Who are you, Mistress Roydon? To make a traitor out of my shadow.

DIANA : Matthew is no traitor, Your Majesty. He’s as loyal to you as he ever was.

ELISABETH : Cannot be loyal to both of us. Men have enough trouble obeying one woman. Let alone two.

DIANA : I pledge myself your humble servant and compel my husband to adhere only to your will.

ELISABETH : She’s clever. Too clever. Like all her kind.

MATTHEW : Her kind have always served you well.

ELISABETH : They turned against me.

MATTHEW : There is no evidence for that.

ELISABETH : Well, perhaps there would have been had you not dispatched him... What does your witch want with my astrologer?

MATTHEW : We are interested in a book in the possession of John Dee’s associate, Edward Kelley.

ELISABETH : And as this book concern the Philosopher’s Stone?

MATTHEW : No. It is of interest only to us creatures.

ELISABETH : Yet Kelley has learned to create the Stone where thousands before him have failed.

MATTHEW : That is what he may wish you to believe.

ELISABETH : The Emperor Rudolf believes it, too. And I will not let the key to eternal life

and limitless riches fall into a Habsbourg hands.

DIANA : You wish to live forever.

ELISABETH : If I must. Every day I pray for God’s help. In saving England from disaster.

MATTHEW : Edward Kelley is not God’s answer. I promise you that.

ELISABETH : I will be the judge of God’s intentions.

MATTHEW : I am… but your servant. And His. I would be glad to prove my loyalty by assisting you in your search for the Philosopher’s Stone.

ELISABETH : I’ve sent ambassadors to Bohemia to retrieve Kelley. The Emperor rebuffed them.

MATTHEW : Perhaps he will be more receptive to me.

ELISABETH : You can be very persuasive.

MATTHEW : Very well, Your Majesty. I will bring you Kelley. And you can lock him in The Tower

until he creates the Philosopher’s Stone.

ELISABETH : Then I may forgive your recent mistakes.

MATTHEW'S HOUSE

DIANA : Will Kelley return with you willingly?

MATTHEW : I shall find out.

DIANA : When do we leave?

MATTHEW : The journey will take months, and it will be very, very hard. And you’ve only just started your training, Diana.

DIANA : Matthew, I’m not staying here on my own. I’m the only one connected to the book. You need me.

MATTHEW : I know. But you should be focusing on your magic so that we can get home.

REDE'S HOUSE

GOODY : Today we will give you one thread at a time. Just let the power move through you.

DIANA : With knot of one, the spell’s begun. With knot of two, the spell is true. With knot of three, the spell is free.

DIANA : It was a tree.

GOODY : Not just a tree. A rowan tree.

SUSANNA : A crossing between worlds.

GOODY :A union of opposites. You are truly a weaver.

DIANA : I didn’t get to finish.

GOODY : In time, you will complete your forespell and your familiar will be revealed.

DIANA : I’ve been waiting for so long. I… I want to learn it all now.

GOODY : You must learn patience. Diana.

DIANA : Yes. Yes.

SUSANNA  : Diana. You are a powerful witch. Of that there is no doubt.

DIANA : Then why can’t I control it?

SUSANNA  : Magic feeds from all aspects of your life. Everything is intertwined.

MATTHEW'S HOUSE

DIANA : I didn’t get past the third knot.

MATTHEW  : Well, sounds like progress to me.

DIANA  : Yes. Maybe. I still think that…

Matthew hears something and signals Diana to stay calm

GALLOWGLASS : One day I’ll beat you to it.

MATTHEW : But not today.

They're laughing

MATTHEW : Gallowglass.

GALLOWGLASS : Ah! Uncle!

MATTHEW : Ah! All right, all right. Put me down. How are you?

GALLOWGLASS : I’m well. How are you?

MATTHEW : All the better for seeing you.

GALLOWGLASS : Eh, and where the hell have you been?

MATTHEW : Come in. Come in.

GALLOWGLASS : The inn-keeper in Chester said you left without paying your bill.

MATTHEW : This is Diana. And this is my nephew, Gallowglass.

DIANA  : How did he find out about us?

GALLOWGLASS : And if you’re not on French soil within the week, he will make for England himself.

DIANA : Sounds like we have no choice. We have to go.

GALLOWGLASS : She speaks sense, at least.

MATTHEW : Philippe always puts a coin in the wax. He expects me to put it into his palm when I arrive. It’s…It’s his thing. His test of loyalty. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen his handwriting. DIANA : If I remember correctly, the war has quieted now that the King has retreated from the Siege of Paris. I can handle the journey.
