Vernon’s practice: entrance

Mel: Hey, if you don't tell me who it is, I'm calling the sheriff.

Jack: Mel, it's me.

Mel: Jack? Hey.

Jack: Hey. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. I couldn't get the key to work.

----------

Vernon’s practice: waiting room

Mel: That's okay. It's just the last time I had an unexpected visitor, you know, there was a knife involved.

Jack: No knife. Just here to borrow Doc's dry bag. What you doing working on a Sunday?

----------

Vernon’s practice: office

Mel: Uh, I'm creating digital files for all of our patients.

Jack: Really? And Doc's okay with that? Last I heard, he thought computers were the demise of civilization.

Mel: Well, if he could keep track of his paper files, then maybe he'd have a leg to stand on, but he doesn't.

Jack: Oh, save me a seat for that discussion, will ya? Did you sort everything out with Stacey?

Mel: I wouldn't give her the ring, so she got upset and left last night.

Jack: Well, good for you. At least you don't have to see her for a while.

----------

Vernon’s practice: waiting room

Mel: Yeah, well, I wasn't invited to the family memorial, so...

Jack: Memorial?

Mel: Oh, tomorrow it'll be a year since Mark passed away.

Jack: Right. How you feeling?

Mel: Um... I'm okay. Yeah, I just need to get through the next couple days, you know, and I still haven't figured out what I wanna do for him. I just don't want to sit around being sad all day. You know, I wanna do something in his memory that helps me move forward, and...

Jack: Sure, yeah. I'm sure you can find a way to reflect without getting overwhelmed.

Mel: Can I ask you something?

Jack: Yeah, sure.

Mel: How come you never talk about Iraq?

Jack: Well, I was mostly in Afghanistan, so...

Mel: I mean... I would think seeing your military buddies would bring up some stuff.

Jack: Yeah, you'd think. Anyway, I'll let you get back to work.

Mel: You didn't answer my question.

Jack: What was the question?

Mel: Is seeing them hard?

Jack: Yeah, of course. But, you know, nothing I can't handle. Tell Doc I said thanks for the dry bag.

Mel: Yeah.

Jack’s bar

Hope: Charmaine's little beast destroyed my favorite boots! And peed on my dining room rug, which I discovered in my bare feet.

Vernon: Well, they say dogs are excellent judges of character.

Hope: I'm not amused. I want my house back!

Vernon: Well, just keep your socks on, sweetie. Charmaine should be able to go home soon.

Hope: I need you to be more specific.

Vernon: Well, I...

Muriel: Hello, Doc! Hope, surprised to see you standing.

Hope: And why would that be?

Muriel: I was afraid you might've strained something at the dance class. I know you're not used to exercising.

Hope: The only thing straining...

Vernon: No, would you...

Preacher: Muriel! Your beef stroganoff is ready. I'll get it for you.

Muriel: Oh, thank you.

Vernon: Oh, yeah, beef stroganoff, that's... Oh, what a great choice.

Muriel: Mmm. You bet, yeah. It's for my Sunday funday.

Hope: Sunday, what day?

Muriel: Funday. It's just an afternoon of wine and games at my house, and... You know, you should stop by.

Preacher: Okay, here you go. It's, uh, it's a little heavy. I'll take it to the car for you.

Vernon: You know what? Let me do that.

Muriel: Oh, my gosh, what a gentleman. Both of you.

Hope: Good luck lifting the beef stroganoff out of your car.

Muriel: Seems like Doc's available.

----------

Parking

Vernon: Muriel, there's, uh, something I need to talk to you about.

Muriel: Oh? Yeah.

Vernon: You know, I, uh, really enjoyed... Our time together.

Muriel: Oh, well, I'm so glad to hear that. You know, I still can't get over just how much you and I have in common.

Vernon: Yes, well, you know, we do have a lot of shared interests for sure.

Muriel: We do. And truthfully, I still have no idea how you and Hope ever got together. The two of you are polar opposites.

Vernon: Well, sometimes being different is what brings people together.

Muriel: True. But I also believe that attraction happens more easily between like-minded people.

Vernon: But history is also a factor.

Muriel: Mm-hmm. And I happen to think that our story is just beginning.

Vernon: Muriel... Hope and I, we have decided to reconcile… I am so sorry. I didn't know how else to tell you.

Muriel: No. There's no need for you to be sorry. I, um... Thank you for being honest and upfront.

Vernon: And I... I just hope we can remain friends.

Muriel: I'm sure we can manage that. And, um, if anything ever changes, then you be sure to let me know.

----------

Hope: How long does it take to put a pot of beef stroganoff into someone's car?

Vernon: I, uh... I told Muriel that you and I were getting back together again.

Hope: You didn't have to do that.

Vernon: Yes, I did. She's an innocent bystander. It was hard enough just to tell her today. I mean, you should've seen the look on her face.

Hope: She's not as doe-eyed as you think.

Vernon: She's a good person… I feel sick that I was complicit in this charade of yours.

----------

Camp

Let's go, ladies! Ha-ha!

Jack: Alrighty, get your asses up! Wakey-wakey!

Zeke: What the hell time is it?

Jack: Come on. It's time to go boating and drink some "bootie" beer.

Zeke: I am hung way the hell over.

Josh: My back is killing me.

Mike: Jack, we were thinking of hitting the road sooner rather than later.

Jack: What are you talking about? We gotta go kayaking.

Mike: Uh, I got a ton of work down at the station.

Josh: Yeah, my daughter has a swim meet to go to.

Zeke: Hey, we can all grab breakfast together at the bar.

Jack: You sound like a bunch of middle-aged men.

Tom: That's because we are.

Jack: Okay, but you don't have to act like it, do you? Okay, what did we come here for, boys? Did we come here for us? 'Cause I thought that was the plan, okay? I get it. You all got lives to get back to, and I respect that, but did we not come here to improvise, adapt, and...

All: Overcome!

Jack: So suck it up, suit up, and let's go, boys!

Zeke: Oorah!

Tom: Oorah!

Jack: Kick your asses up and down that river!

----------

Jack’s bar

Preacher: Ricky, I'll be back in a few hours, so George is on his way over to keep an eye on things.

Ricky: Great, so Jack told you.

Preacher: About stealing the liquor? Yeah.

Ricky: It's just... Jack's never been mad at me before.

Preacher: Well, I think he's just more, you know, disappointed than mad.

Ricky: Great, now I really feel like garbage.

Preacher: All right, look. Jack has given you a lot of responsibilities. He's counting on you to fill his shoes when he's not here.

Ricky: Yeah, I know I screwed up. Just sometimes, I feel like I never got to be a kid.

Preacher: I understand. As long as it's, you know, a one-time deal. I mean, you should feel good that he's treating you like a man… But trust me, you'll be stronger for it in the long run. Don't worry about Jack. He'll come around.

----------

Hope’s house: living room

Hope: Come in… That mongrel had another accident. I know he's doing it on purpose.

Mel: I'm sure that's not true.

Hope: That's what he wants you to believe. Fair warning, Tucker. You're on my list… Oh! Mouthy! Just like your mother. Oh, Charmaine's in the shower, by the way. She'll be down as soon as she uses up all the hot water.

Mel: Great.

Hope: Someone pee on your floor?

Mel: Not that I know of.

Hope: What's wrong with you, then? This isn't snooping! It's a conversation.

Mel: Oh. What's the difference?

Hope: If you don't wanna talk, I'll back off.

Mel: I don't wanna talk.

Hope: Really? It might help.

Mel: No, it's just... Tomorrow, it'll be a year since Mark passed away, and I don't know how I want to spend it... So...

Hope: Well... There's no right or wrong way to get through one of those anniversaries.

Mel: Right, I mean, but that's the thing. It feels wrong even calling it an anniversary. You know, I mean, our anniversaries were always about celebrating, and tomorrow's...

Hope: It's about your loss.

Mel: Yeah. I mean, how is someone supposed to mark the worst day of their life?

Hope: You know you don't have to do anything. After my second husband, Evan, died, I completely ignored everything that would stir things up: birthdays, anniversaries, holidays.

Mel: Did that work? I mean, bottling up your feelings like that?

Hope: Worked for me.

Mel: You know, I know everyone, you know, has a different way of grieving, but everything that I've read says that in order to heal, you have to face your emotions.

Hope: That's why I stick to gardening magazines.

Vernon: Ladies.

Hope: Hi, Vernon. I think I'll put on some tea.

Vernon: Have you seen Charmaine?

Mel: Uh, she's just getting out of the shower. It'll be a few minutes.

Vernon: Her exam was supposed to be ten minutes ago.

Mel: What do you want me to say?

Vernon: Well... I heard from Connie...

Mel: I know. She's upset because I gave Lizzie a prescription for the pill.

Vernon: Oh, upset is putting it mildly.

Mel: What did you say?

Vernon: I told her that you... Were doing your job. Yeah, just give her another prescription, and I'll deal with Connie.

Mel: Well, I offered, but Lizzie refused. My guess is she needs Connie to drive her to the pharmacy in Clear River.

Vernon: Yeah. Connie doesn't wanna enable her by helping fill the prescription.

Mel: Mm-hmm. There nothing we can do?

Vernon: Well, I just happen to keep birth control samples on hand, along with other drugs for patients who can't afford prescriptions... You can use those. They're locked in the file cabinet in my office.

Mel: Really?

Vernon: Lizzie is an adult. Connie has no legal right to interfere with her medical care.

Mel: That's right. Wow! I'm sorry. I just... I wasn't expecting you to be on my side on this.

Vernon: In medicine, there are no sides to take. There are only patients to treat. Ah.

Charmaine: Hi! I just.. I have to dry my hair. I'll be 20 minutes, tops.

Mel: Ugh.

Vernon: And there are times that I wish I became a veterinarian.

----------

Paige’s truck

Ricky: Hello?

Lizzie: Hey. I was just napping.

Ricky: If I sleep during the day, I can't sleep at night.

Lizzie: Jesus, even your internal clock follows the rules. So, what are you up to today?

Ricky: Uh, working on a history test, then I have a second shift at the bar.

Lizzie: My dad sent me some cash.

Ricky: Wow, that must be nice.

Lizzie: Nah, it's guilt money. It was his idea to send me here.

Ricky: Better than nothing though.

Lizzie: Maybe. Anyway, I wanna go shopping. You wanna come?

Ricky: Yeah. Sure.

Lizzie: Let's go to Eureka. They have a Sephora.

Ricky: Can't... Drive, I don't have a car.

Lizzie: You just drove us to that lame party.

Ricky: It's my grandma's car. We could take the bus.

Lizzie: Ew, living here is humiliating enough.

Ricky: I'm not supposed to drive the car outside of town.

Lizzie: I guess I'll have to go by myself… I could always hitchhike.

Ricky: Don't... Don't do that. I'll take you.

Lizzie: Pick me up at 1:00. I'll close early.

Ricky: You can do that?

Lizzie: Who's gonna stop me?

----------

Street

Lilly: Yeah, just, uh... Right there… Perfect. Bye now. Okay. Come on, little girl. Here we go, sweetheart. Oh!

Brady: She's getting so big!

Lilly: You saw her less than a week ago.

Brady: That's right.

Lilly: What do you want?

Brady: I just need you to sign the last page of your contract, then we can officially close the deal and get your check for your farm. It's in the truck. I can go get it if you want.

Lilly: Who's Calvin?

Brady: He's a... Local businessman.

Lilly: I heard he's a drug dealer.

Brady: Well, that's some serious misinformation.

Lilly: Look, I know Calvin owns Emerald Lumber, the company that wants to buy my property.

Brady: Lilly, they've already bought it.

Lilly: Not so fast. Jack says it's not a done deal until I sign that contract.

Brady: We negotiated in good faith, so we considered it sold.

Lilly: If I had known who was behind this, I would never have even entertained that offer.

Brady: Lilly, look, if this is about more money, I'm sure I can get them to sweeten the deal.

Lilly: Not everything is about money. Excuse me.

Hope’s house: guest room

Vernon: Well, your blood sugar looks good. And, uh... We seem to have found the right formula to keep the nausea from the HG under control.

Charmaine: So, when can I go home?

Vernon: Today, if you like… But I do have some conditions.

Charmaine: Whatever you want.

Vernon: You have to return regularly for follow-ups.

Charmaine: Of course.

Vernon: And I want you to set up a birth plan with Mel.

Charmaine: Okay.

Vernon: And I know that Jack's buddies are in town, so... When you finish packing, call me, and I'll take you back to Clear River.

Charmaine: Thank you so much. Both of you.

Mel: Just give me a sec.

Vernon: Sure.

Mel: Uh, so Doc asked me to do the birth plan because I have more experience with complicated pregnancies.

Charmaine: You don't need to explain. I'm so thankful for everything that you've done for me, Jack, our babies. It's unbelievable. Finally getting everything I ever wanted.

Mel: Well, I'm happy that you're feeling better.

Charmaine: Can't wait to tell Jack that I'm going home.

Mel: Well, we'll talk soon, yeah?

Charmaine: Mm-hmm.

Mel: Okay.

----------

River

Josh: Ho-ly crap!

Mike: It's a bit of a pinball machine, huh? Where do we put in?

Preacher: That's not good. Drop looks like a heavy four, maybe a five.

Jack: Whoo! Finally! Some damn excitement! All right, Preach, let's put in.

Preacher: I'm not doing this. Nah, we should go downriver where the current lightens up.

Jack: Why?

Preacher: It's not good, Jack.

Jack: Come on. These guys wanna go. You guys wanna go, right?

Josh: What? No one's gonna say it?

Jack: Say what?

Mike: Jack, it's not a big deal. Let's just find another spot.

Jack: No, not before I hear what Josh has to say.

Josh: Look, man, we just... We don't want to have to pull you out of the river.

Jack: The hell does that mean?

Josh: It means... It means you've been drinking all night.

Jack: Yeah, we've all been drinking, right?

Josh: Yeah, but we quit at dinnertime. How about you?

Jack: What, y'all agree with him? You?

Tom: Why don't we just go downriver and find a good put-in?

Jack: No, no, no. Y'all wanted to leave early, right? So let's just call it, then.

Josh: Jack!

Mike: Come on, man!

Zeke: Yeah, man.

Preacher: All right, guys. Let's go. Come on.

----------

Muriel’s house: porch

Hope: I brought you a pie.

Muriel: Thank you.

Hope: It's for your party. Strawberry cream cheese with a graham cracker crust.

Muriel: Sounds delicious. How thoughtful of you. Is that it? Did... Did you want to come in?

Hope: Oh, no. I just wanted to say I'm sorry... For the way things ended with you and Doc. He's a decent man, and I know he feels bad about all this… So do I.

Muriel: Well... I appreciate you coming all the way over here to tell me that and for the record, no hard feelings.

Hope: Okay. Good. I'm glad we cleared things up. Enjoy your, uh, afternoon.

Muriel: Oh, and Hope?

Hope: Yes?

Muriel: Bravo. Your performance as Doc's supportive ex-wife was flawless, but unfortunately for you, the show's not over. Because when you screw things up with Doc again, and we both know you will, I'll be there to pick up the pieces.

----------

Cabin

Mark: Hey, babe. Happy anniversary. I love you… Oh, okay, I gotta run. We got an MVA rolling in. So, I will see you tonight. You know, we can go out to dinner, or we can stay in and have lots of sex. I vote for the latter. Love you… Hey, babe. Happy anniversary. I love you. Oh, okay, I gotta run. We got an MVA rolling in. So, I will see you tonight. You know, we can go out to dinner, or we can stay in and have lots of sex.

----------

Jack’s bar

Jack: More coffee?

Josh: Oh, no. I gotta take off.

Zeke: Yeah, I'm gonna need help loading up, so...

Preacher: Hey, I got ya, Z.

Zeke: Yeah, cool.

Jack: All right.

Josh: We good?

Jack: Yeah, we're good.

Josh: Thanks.

Jack: Sure… Hey, man. I still need to know what we can do about Calvin.

Mike: Not much at this point. The evidence so far is circumstantial, and we don't have enough for a warrant.

Jack: Come on. He's into something new, something bad. I can feel it.

Mike: Yeah, Jack. Your hunches have saved my life more than once, but the DEU is gonna need more.

Jack: And what about the pot business?

Mike: Like a lot of illegal growers, he claims to be moving towards compliance, so nobody's getting prosecuted right now… Yeah, I, uh, I wish I could do more, but it's out of my jurisdiction.

Jack: Mm-hmm.

Mike: Look, um, I'm gonna keep in touch with the sheriff's office and hopefully, we'll get lucky, catch him in the act.

Jack: All right. Thanks, man. Hey, listen, I... I didn't want the weekend to end like this.

Mike: Oh, oh, don't stress about it. We all had a good time.

Jack: You didn't think it was a bust?

Mike: No! No, not at all. Did you?

Jack: Pretty much.

Mike: Brother... You got a lot of stuff on your plate, and we both know that stress can trigger other things.

Jack: Yeah, I wanted to blow off some steam, you know?

Mike: Just make sure that you're taking care of yourself in the process, okay?

Jack: Yeah, no. I'm good. I'm good. Thank you.

----------

Parking

Tom: I'm speaking for all of us. We're worried about Jack.

Preacher: Well, you know, he's hard-headed when it comes to his personal life.

Tom: Just do me a favor, keep an eye on him?

Preacher: I am.

Tom: Preach. He left his kayaks at the launch.

Preacher: I got ya.

Zeke: All right, time to go.

Preacher: All right, man.

Josh: Great to see ya.

Tom: Thanks, Top.

Zeke: All right, later.

Jack: Yeah.

Mike: Yup, okay, Preach.

Josh: All right. Take it easy, Jack.

Jack: You drive safe.

Josh: You bet.

Preacher: You know, they're worried about you.

Jack: There's nothing to worry about.

----------

On the road

Mel: Hey!

Jack: Hey.

Mel: Hey! I thought you'd be with your buddies.

Jack: Well, they had to head back, so...

Mel: Oh. How was it?

Jack: I mean, I guess it wasn't quite what I expected, but...

Mel: Oh. Okay. You okay?

Jack: Yeah. All good.

Mel: You sure? You look like you haven't slept.

Jack: Well, we were up late, you know? Had a few too many. I guess I don't handle my hangovers the way I used to.

Mel: Right.

Jack: You know, I should probably get going.

Mel: Okay. Where are you headed?

Jack: I promised Charmaine I'd stop by after... The boys left, so...

Mel: Right.

Jack: Did you figure your thing out with Mark, the whole...

Mel: Oh, um... No, not yet. I thought a run might help me think of something.

Jack: Yeah. Probably a good idea.

Mel: Yeah.

Jack: All right. Well, I'm around if you need anything.

Mel: Okay, thanks. And if there's anything I can do...

Jack: I know where to find you.

----------

On lake

Mark: Hey, promise me something.

Mel: What?

Mark: Promise me you'll never let me turn into my father, okay?

Mel: I like your father. Your mother is kinda...

Mark: Stop it! No, I mean it. I don't want to turn into that guy. I don't want to be 70 years old and working my ass off and... "I'm rich, but so miserable."

Mel: Oh, Mark.

Mark: I mean, I love what I do, but the last thing I want to see before I go, I want it to be you. Not... Hospital meatloaf… Ah, promise me.

Mel: Yes, I promise… So, then what are you gonna do with your days when you retire?

Mark: Um... Sail around the world, making love to you in every port.

----------

Hope’s house: balcony

Vernon: Hi.

Hope: When Charmaine's not around, we get along just fine. And Jack's coming to pick him up tomorrow, which is one day too late if you ask me, but he wanted to get Charmaine settled first.

Vernon: Who are you trying to kid? He loves you. You love anybody who follows orders.

Hope: No, I baked today. He probably just smells the graham crackers.

Vernon: Oh... Are we having pie?

Hope: No.

Vernon: Why not?

Hope: I made it for Muriel. I felt bad. So I went over to Muriel's to apologize.

Vernon: Oh. Now don't you feel better?

Hope: No… Apologizing to Muriel is like pouring water on a grease fire. All it does is fuel the flames.

Vernon: No matter how difficult somebody is, if you've done wrong by them, the right thing to do is apologize. I'm proud of you.

Hope: How proud?

Vernon: Very, very proud.

Hope: Hi, Mel… Yeah, sure… I'll grab my sewing kit and be right there.

Vernon: Is everything all right?

Hope: I'll explain on the way. Come on, Tucker.

----------

Charmaine’s house: living room

Charmaine: Hey. I... I have a surprise.

Jack: Oh? I'm not sure I'm ready for any more surprise...

Charmaine: Isn't it amazing?

Jack: Did you do all this?

Charmaine: No, my aunt and uncle in Portland bought everything, and then my friends from the salon put everything together. I know it's bad luck to do any of this stuff before the end of the first trimester, but they were just so excited. I... I couldn't say no. And isn't the theme perfect? When you wish upon a star, dreams come true.

Jack: Uh-huh. Yeah, it's like a fairy tale.

Charmaine: Feel how soft these are. I think they're chenille. Or maybe they're fleece. I dunno, but they're just so soft. And I love the pattern, it's just so cute... Jack? You okay?

Jack: I'll be back in a second.

----------

Charmaine’s house: bathroom

Charmaine: Jack? Jack?

Jack: Yeah, I'll be right out.

----------

Charmaine’s house: living room

Charmaine: Is everything all right?

Jack: Yeah, I, uh, I just... I gotta get back to the bar.

Charmaine: Right now?

Jack: Yeah, Preacher's slammed.

Charmaine: How do you know?

Jack: Well, he's been there most of the day.

Charmaine: Why don't you call and see if he needs a hand?

Jack: No.

Charmaine: Why not?

Jack: Look, I really gotta get going.

Charmaine: Why don't you get somebody to cover for you?

Jack: What is this, National Question Jack Day?

Charmaine: Jack, I'm not trying to upset you.

Jack: I know, I know. I'm just... I gotta... I gotta get going. All right? I'll, uh, I'll call ya later.

----------

Lake

Mel: Are you sure you're okay with me using your boat?

Hope: It was just gathering dust.

Mel: Well, I appreciate it.

Hope: It's a lovely tribute.

Mel: Thanks.

Hope: Scissors.

Vernon: Oh.

Mel: The, uh, the actual anniversary is tomorrow.

Vernon: Maybe if you two ladies want to be alone... I mean, if this is a woman thing...

Hope: This boat is older than you are. If it sinks, I'll need someone to go in after it.

Vernon: And the waders are in the truck.

Mel: I would like you to stay.

Hope: You know, we can come back and do this tomorrow if you'd like.

Mel: No. No, no, I thought about it. And I think that the only way I'm gonna get through tomorrow is if I treat it like any other day… You know, which is why I wanted to do this now. A year ago today, things weren't perfect, but we were together, and... That's how I want to remember it.

Hope: She's ready. Are you?

Mel: Yeah… Yeah.

Hope: I hope you're sailing right now, babe.

Mel: Um...

Vernon: Everything okay?

Mel: I have to go. No, I'm sorry, I have to go.

----------

Street

Lizzie: You bored? I know I took forever in Sephora.

Ricky: Sorry. No, it's just the bar. I don't wanna be late getting back.

Lizzie: There's more to life than work.

Ricky: Says the person who doesn't need to work.

Lizzie: Uh, I have a job.

Ricky: But you don't take that job seriously because you don't need to work. I work because I have to pay for things.

Lizzie: You're at the bar way more than you need to be.

Ricky: Only when Jack needs me.

Lizzie: And you never say no.

Ricky: He's done a lot for me.

Lizzie: I think he's taking advantage.

Ricky: Hey, that... That's not true.

Lizzie: He knows how much you like him. And he also knows that you won't say no to him. Look, I had to learn the hard way to stand up for myself because no one else ever would.

Ricky: But your parents support you.

Lizzie: My parents wanted to ship me to some Outward Bound prison camp for teens, so they wouldn't have to explain to their friends at the country club why I wasn't at university. I didn't commit murder. I stole some makeup from a CVS once. I had to threaten to run away, so they'd send me here instead. All I'm saying is you need to start thinking about what you want.

River

Preacher: I'm not gonna let you do this, Jack! You're not going in!

Jack: I know what I'm doing! Let me go.

Preacher: Think about what you're doing! You're crazy!

Jack: Look, meet me at the bottom, then!

Preacher: Mel, he won't listen to me. He's dead if he puts his kayak in that water.

Mel: Jack, hey!

Jack: The hell are you doing here?

Mel: What are you doing? It's just not safe.

Jack: Look, I know what I'm doing, okay?

Mel: All right, I'm gonna... I'm gonna come with you.

Jack: What?

Mel: I said I'm coming with you.

Jack: No, you're not.

Mel: Well, if it's safe enough for you, it's safe enough for me.

Jack: Can you stop it?

Mel: Do you have another life vest?

Jack: Look, did you hear me? I don't want you here, please!

Mel: Yeah, I heard you.

Jack: Then go, leave!

Mel: No, after we kayak! What? It must not be that dangerous. Right? Because you're not the kind of man that would risk leaving twins without a father… I'm gonna head back up. You coming?

----------

Woods

Jack: Thank you.

Mel: You know, when Mark died and when I lost my baby... For a long time, I... I didn't care whether I lived or died. I'm sorry. I wish I knew how to help you.

Jack: Someone was missing from the reunion… He didn't make it back… And it was my fault. It was my job to make sure that my guys came back alive.

Mel: Jack, you know that's an impossible standard to hold yourself to… People die in war.

Jack: Mel, if I can't keep a grown man safe, then how am I supposed to protect a helpless infant? No, I'm sorry, make that two helpless infants.

Mel: You are the strongest, most responsible man that I know… I mean, look at how you've devoted yourself to taking care of this town. If anyone is fit to be a father, it's you.

Jack: I don't trust myself.

Mel: You know, down there, I was gonna go with you… I was completely willing to trust you with my life.

Jack: Oh, please. You know I'd never put you in danger.

Mel: I know. You just made my point.

Jack: Hmm.

Mel: You are gonna have two children that you love more than anything else in the world. And they are gonna love you more than anything. You're not gonna want to miss that.

Jack: Should we get going?

Mel: In a minute.

----------

Jack’s bar

Preacher: Where's Ricky?

George: Never showed up.

Preacher: All right. Uh, thanks, George. You can... You can clock out.

George: All right, thanks.

----------

Preacher: Late dinner?

Jamie: I came by for today's special, but you're all out.

Preacher: Folks around here, they eat early.

Jamie: Oh, not me. I'm a night owl. My day doesn't start until around 4:00 in the afternoon.

Preacher: Not a bad trade if you're in the restaurant business.

Jamie: Exactly. So, tell me something… Why are you wasting your talents in this tiny bar when you could be working at a five-star restaurant or, better yet, your own place?

Preacher: Uh... Well, once I settled in Virgin River, I never considered moving. The folks here, they're like family to me.

Jamie: Mmm. Family is great… But sometimes a little distance could be a good thing.

Preacher: I don't know. I don't think my, uh... My résumé would wow anyone in an upscale restaurant, and I couldn't imagine starting from the bottom either.

Jamie: What if I could help you? Could be a chance at a whole new life.

----------

On the road

Lizzie: Relax, you're not gonna be that late.

Ricky: I'm... I'm relaxed.

Lizzie: If this is relaxed, I'd hate to see you stressed out.

Ricky: You should really keep your seat belt on.

Lizzie: Oh, my God. You sound just like my dad.

Ricky: It's basic automotive safety.

Lizzie: So, do you want sour ball, gummy worm, or licorice?

Ricky: Never seen someone eat so much candy in my entire life.

Lizzie: Makes me happy. So, what do you want?

Ricky: Um, I'll have a gummy worm.

Lizzie: Open your mouth… Are you blushing?

Ricky: No, I'm not.

Lizzie: You are! Look in the mirror.

Ricky: No, it's just sunburn.

Lizzie: Look out!

----------

Woods

Sheriff: Jack. Mel.

Jack: Hey, Sheriff… What's going on?

Sheriff: A couple of hikers found a body.
