Épisode Episode 8 S02E08 - A Discovery of Witches Saison 2

Londres, 1591

Dans leur chambre, Diana étudie le Livre de la Vie qui refuse de lui dévoiler ses secrets : des mots indéchiffrables flottent sur les pages. Matthew arrive et lui demande d'arrêter, elle se rend malade. Il lui demande d'aller manger un peu. Diana refuse, mais gentiment son mari insiste et elle finit par accepter.

De nos jours

Au siège de la Congrégation, Peter Knox informe Gerbert de ses découvertes : des lettres d'Edward Kelley prouvent que le Livre de Vie était bien en sa possession en 1591. Il y confirme qu'il en a arraché trois pages et qu'il a donné une page à chacune des trois espèces. Les deux conspirateurs se demandent si les Clermont et les sorcières en ont une.

Pendant ce temps, à Sept-Tours, Emily regarde la page du Livre de Vie qui vient de la famille Bishop, celle que leur maison de Madison leur a rendu.

De retour à Oxford, Miriam rend visite à Marcus parce qu'il l'évite. Il est toujours fâché que personne ne lui ait dit que Matthew était atteint de la fureur sanguinaire. Comme Ysabeau, Miriam lui dit que c'était pour le protéger. Elle précise que Philippe en a fait son assassin pour éradiquer la maladie. Marcus s'étonne d'avoir été épargné, mais Miriam souligne que les actes de son père parlent pour lui : il n'a pas pu le tuer LUI. Mais Marcus est toujours en colère d'avoir été mis à l'écart, il en a marre de sa famille, des Chevaliers de Lazare : il veut tout laisser tomber et en donner les rennes à Baldwin. Il veut se concentrer sur ses amis, son travail, sa vie au milieu des humains...

Marcus rend visite à Phoebe au travail, mais elle n'a pas de temps à lui consacrer.  Il lui tend son médaillon des Chevaliers de Lazare, lui dit qu'il est le Grand Maître de l'organisation et l'encourage à faire des recherches. 

Après son retour à la maison, Marcus et Nathaniel s'assoient dans la cuisine pour discuter de la vie amoureuse du vampire et des problèmes qu'elle implique. Sophie descend les marches et leur dit que le bébé arrive.

À Sept-Tours, Emily tente à nouveau de convoquer Rebecca. Elle réussit pendant un moment, mais la forme sa fantomatique disparaît avant qu'elle ne puisse répondre. Sarah la prend sur le fait et elle est furieuse, mais Emily essaie de la convaincre que sa soeur a un message pour elle. Elles se disputent et se séparent fâchées.

Dans son bureau, Ysabeau est au téléphone avec Gerbert. Il dit de manière menaçante qu'il est temps pour elle de choisir un camp si elle possède les pages de l'Ashmole, mais elle reste imperturbable. Il menace alors de démonter le château pierre par pierre. Ysabeau lui demande calmement de se souvenir à qui il parle.

Ysabeau rejoint Em dehors, ayant entendu la dispute avec Sarah, et lui tend un verre de vin : elle lui conseille de ne jamais s'endormir sur une dispute puis part. Lorsque Sarah arrive plus tard, les deux femmes font la paix.

Phoebe, envahie par la curiosité, demande l'aide d'un collègue qui commence à étudier le médaillon de Marcus pendant qu'elle commence à lire des articles sur internet sur les Chevaliers de Lazare. Elle reconnaît un croquis sur une page Web et se rend compte qu'il correspond à l'homme dans les portraits que Marcus essayait d'acheter : c'est Matthew. Elle se dirige vers le coffre-fort et est rejointe par Domenico, qu'elle croit être un policier. La femme devient méfiante une fois qu'il mentionne Marcus, mais ils sont heureusement interrompus par son collègue qui arrive le médaillon en main. Domenico le reconnaît et part rapidement lorsque Phoebe lui apprend que Marcus le lui a donné et qu'il est Grand-Maître des Chevaliers de Lazare.

Sophie a donné naissance à une petite fille en bonne santé, Margaret. Elle et Nathaniel sont rejoints par Marcus, Miriam et Agatha à l'hôpital. Marcus et Miriam prennent immédiatement note du fait que le sang de Margaret chante, ce qui confirme qu'elle est une sorcière. 

Pendant ce temps, Emily et Sarah se souviennent de Rebecca, et Emily est abasourdie lorsque Sarah accepte finalement d'aller visiter le site sacré avec elle afin d'en découvrir davantage sur la page en leur possession.

Phoebe arrive chez Marcus : elle est prête à l'écouter, cette fois. Marcus lui apprend la véritable identité des personnes dans les portraits qu'il essayait d'acheter, et Phoebe commence enfin à le croire. Il poursuit en expliquant qu'il est né en 1757 et que Matthew l'a engendré plus tard en 1781. Phoebe continue de poser plus de questions sur sa vie de vampire. Ils se promènent et leur conversation vire finalement au sujet du régime alimentaire de Marcus et de la diminution de l'existence des créatures. Ils retournent à la maison Marcus continue d'enseigner à Phoebe les aptitudes des vampires, et ils finissent par coucher ensemble.

Maintenant qu'elle est clairement à l'aise avec toute les révélations du vampire, Phoebe met la vitesse de Marcus à l'épreuve le défiant d'aller chercher de la crème glacée à la boutique du coin. Elle est stupéfaite quand il revient à la maison en moins d'une minute avec ce qu'elle a demandé. 

Phoebe parle à Marcus de la visite-surprise de Domenico à son travail, et elle lui fait remarquer que le vampire a montré du respect en apprenant qu'il était le Grand Maître des Chevaliers de Lazare. Marcus lui dit qu'il veut tout abandonner, mais Phoebe l'encourage à utiliser les Chevaliers pour un changement positif pour les générations futures : il n'est pas d'accord avec la politique des créatures ou leur infrastructure ? Qu'il change tout cela, il en a la possibilité !

Marcus cherche Baldwin au siège de la Congrégation et l'informe qu'il ne lui remettra pas le titre de Grand Maître : Phoebe a réussi à le convaincre. Comme Marcus lui dit qu'il envisage d'utiliser les Chevaliers pour le bien de toutes les créatures, Baldwin est mécontent, car ceux-ci ont été formés pour protéger les intérêts des de Clermont. Marcus dit à Baldwin qu'il a besoin de son aide (en tant que chevalier, il est à ses ordres), et il partage le secret sur Margaret, la petite fille sorcière née de Sophie et Nathanie, deux démons. Il a décidé que son premier acte en tant que Grand Maître sera de protéger le bébé et sa famille.  Baldwin est furieux, le traite de stupide et lui met dans la figure que ses idées sont contaminées, comme son sang. Il crache son venin ; Philippe aurait du tuer toute la lignée d'Ysabeau, lui inclus. Marcus ne se laisse pas démonter lui disant qu'il comprend, à présent, pourquoi il a toujours déçu Philippe.

Toujours à la congrégation, Domenico cherche avantage des informations qu'il a apprises sur le vampire tueur d'Oxford atteint de fureur sanguinaire et essaie de passer un marché avec Gerbert pour qu'il ait la primeur du nom du meurtrier. C'est alors que Gerbert voit Marcus partir et décide d'aller questionner Baldwin.

Alors que Marcus est parti, Gerbert entre dans le bureau de Baldwin et demande à savoir pourquoi il était là. Baldwin lui répondant que c'est une affaire de famille, Gerbert lui fait remarquer que Marcus et Matthew habitent Oxford et se demande si sa visite à avoir avec la fureur sanguinaire. Pour s'éloigner de ce sujet qui peut mettre sa famille en danger, Baldwin lui parle de Margaret.

Domenico de son côté intercepte Marcus juste avant qu'il ne quitte le siège de la Congrégation. Il lui dit qu'il a trouvé un lien entre Matthew et les meurtres d'Oxford, car il a vu quels portraits ont été volés chez Cooper Sinclair jusqu'où il a suivi la piste du vampire atteint de fureur sanguinaire : ils représentent Matthew et Diana. Il le prévient : quand il attrapera enfin le vampire responsable des attaques, son identité et sa fidélité seront à vendre. Marcus en prend note.

Gerbert partage les informations sur l'enfant avec Knox, qui se rend à l'hôpital. Il utilise rapidement sa magie pour endormir Sophie et Nathaniel et s'approche de Margaret pour confirmer qu'elle est une sorcière. Agatha entre dans la pièce et elle est furieuse : elle exige que Knox parte, s'éloigne de sa petite-fille. Knox lui répond méchamment que parce que l'enfant est une sorcière, elle doit être élevée par sa propre espèce. Des dispositions seront prises dans ce sens.

Emily et Sarah s'aventurent la nuit sur le site sacré, le temple de Diane, et tentent à nouveau de convoquer Rebecca. Cela fonctionne, mais dans son état de choc en voyant le visage de sa sœur, Sarah tend la main vers elle et disperse le sort.

Londres, 1591

Diana se réveille d'un rêve inquiétant sur l'arbre où se mêlent des corps de créatures agonisantes et hurlantes. Matthew lui demande si tout va bien et elle répond par un sinistre «Je ne pense pas.»

MARCUS : You all knew and you kept it from me.

YSABEAU : If we’re linked to the murders, it will be the end of the de Clermonts.

GERBERT : Do you have any leads yet?

PHOEBE : I did a lot of researchon those portraits, but could never pin their exact origin down. Whatever it is, just tell me.

MARCUS : I’m a vampire.

PHOEBE : Come on, Marcus.

MARCUS : No, Phoebe, seriously, I’m hundreds of years old.

PHOEBE : Goodbye, Marcus.

EM : You can find out what’s inside that book and why it’s connected to Diana.

SARAH : How do we do that exactly? We only have one page.

EM : We need to connect with someone who did. We know Stephen did. Maybe Rebecca did too.

SARAH : If you’re proposing to summon the dead, forget about it.

KELLEY : Stop screaming!

MATTHEW : This books is made from the skin of creatures, witches, daemons, vampires. I’m sorry, Diana. But this is more like a book of death.

MATTHEW'S HOME/THE BEDROOM

Matthew arrives
On the bed, Diana examines the book

DIANA : I’ve been trying to understand it, but it’s resisting me. The harder I try, the stranger I feel.

MATTHEW : It’s making you ill. Stop.

She continues

MATTHEW : Francoise has prepared some food for you downstairs.

DIANA : I’m not hungry.

MATTHEW : Mon coeur

DIANA : All right.

MATTHEW : Thank you.

KNOX : I’ve located a letter written by Edward Kelley.

GERBERT : Give me the edited highlights.

KNOX : It proves your theory that the Book Of Life was in his possession in 1591. It also reveals that he tore three of its pages out. Kelley claims to have bequeathed a single page to each of the three species. Which would explain why I couldn’t summon up the Book…It’s incomplete.

GERBERT : Diana Bishop managed it.

KNOX : Perhaps she already had a page? If we could find one, it might help us call it up from the Bodleian.

GERBERT : The vampire page could already be in the hands of the de Clermonts. I’ll speak to Ysabeau. And the witches’ page?

KNOX : I’m investigating.

On the page of Knights of Lazarus she finds a sketch : the man is the one on the stolen pair of Elizabethan miniatures, Matthew  de Clermont!

PHOEBE : I’m just going down to the vault.

DOMENICO : Sorry. Didn’t mean to startle you.I just have some questions about the robbery.

PHOEBE : You’re police. Right, sorry. I was just thinking about the force required to open this door.

DOMENICO : I know the stolen goods are late 16th century, but do you have an accurate date?

PHOEBE : No, I… I already explained this in my statement. Would you like to come to my office?

DOMENICO : What did Marcus Whitmore tell you about them?

PHOEBE : Marcus?

DOMENICO : You’ve been socializing.

NATHANIEL : Margaret.

SOPHIE : We like it.

MARCUS : Why, hey, Margaret.

Seeing the change of mood of the vampires

AGATHA : Is she all right?

MARCUS : Yeah.

MIRIAM : The baby’s blood is singing. That confirms she’s a witch.

MARCUS : The Congregation can’t be allowed to find her. Once the doctor’s given the all clear, you should move to Sept-Tours for a while. You can decide what to do in the long-term once the dust has settled.

NATHANIEL : If she’ll be safer there, then, yeah, of course.

SEPT-TOURS / EM AND SARAH'S BEDROOM

SARAH : I remember watching you and Rebecca doing your higher magic. I’d practice in my room, keep failing, over and over. I was so desperate to surprise you, to be part of it.

EM : Rebecca wanted to include you.

SARAH : I know. I wouldn’t let her.

EM : You were so goddamn stubborn.

SARAH : I resented higher magic. It kept me apart from her.

EM : She loved you, honey.

SARAH : I don’t want that to happen to us.

They kiss

SARAH : How do you feel about a jailbreak tonight? You’re right. We need to know more about the page.

EM : Serious?

SARAH : We could find your sacred site.

EM : Honey, I don’t think it’s far... if I can just harness its power, I know it can help me go deeper. I know…

SARAH : Okay. I’m not gonna pretend it doesn’t frighten me. But I don’t want you to do this alone.

Marcus leaves his house and meets Phoebe who's waiting for him

PHOEBE : I’m ready for answers.

MARCUS' HOUSE/KITCHEN

PHOEBE : This looks like the man in those portraits.

MARCUS : That’s my father, Matthew de Clermont. He's the man who sired me, well, who turned me into a vampire.

PHOEBE : That’s why you wanted the miniatures so badly. And who’s the woman?

MARCUS : Diana Bishop. She’s a witch.

Phoebe looks surprise

MARCUS : Yeah. It’s a long story.

PHOEBE : But those miniatures and this artwork, they were painted hundreds of years apart...So, those photos from the other night, they were all of you.

MARCUS : Yeah.

PHOEBE : When were you born?

MARCUS : 1757. But Matthew sired me in 1781.

PHOEBE : And how did it happen?

MARCUS : I was a surgeon’s assistant in the Continental Army, dying of fever. Matthew offered me survival and I took it.

PHOEBE : Do you like it? Being a… Uh…

MARCUS : I do, yeah. It can be lonely sometimes.

PHOEBE : But your family, your human family, they died hundreds of years ago, right?

MARCUS : I have a vampire family now.

PHOEBE : But human friends?

MARCUS : Of course.

PHOEBE : And do any of them know what you are?

MARCUS : Only you. Give me your hand.

He puts Phoebe's hand on his heart

PHOEBE : Oh, it’s not beating.

MARCUS : It beats slower. And it loves longer.

They kiss

IN A PARK

MARCUS : We eat raw meats and rare if we’re in company. And some nuts and berries. But we don’t really crave food.

PHOEBE : You crave blood. Do you crave my blood?

MARCUS : You’re not in any danger from me.

PHOEBE : No, but do you bite people? Is that how you feed?

MARCUS : Generally, we try not to feed on humans anymore.

PHOEBE : Animals?

MARCUS : I work in A&E.

PHOEBE : The blood in your fridge.Do you just, like, glug it down?

MARCUS : Yep.

PHOEBE : What, straight from the bag?

MARCUS : No! In a mug. I’m not a heathen.

IN A CAFE

PHOEBE : So I’ve met creatures before.

MARCUS : Yeah. Met. Worked with. Maybe even loved. There used to be a lot more of us, but our numbers are dwindling.We’re slowly dying out.

PHOEBE : That’s awful. Why?

MARCUS : We don’t really know. Some vampires are unable to sire, witches are losing their powers, many daemons are driven to madness. But right now, it’s a mystery. You know, there was a time many millennia ago where 50% of the population were non-human, and we all intermingled.

But the humans grew afraid of the “other.”

PHOEBE : We still are.

MARCUS : Technologically, you’re advancing so fast, but socially? You’re going backwards, building walls and enforcing borders. Human prejudice is worse than ever.

PHOEBE : Who is the oldest vampire you’ve ever met?

MARCUS : My grandfather Philippe. He never told anyone how long he’d been around, but it was millennia.

PHOEBE : He saw the whole of modern human history.

MARCUS : He died in the 1940s. But my grandmother has seen it too.

MARCUS' HOUSE/KITCHEN

MARCUS : I remember when Blankers-Koen won her fourth gold medal. Ysabeau was ecstatic.

PHOEBE : So…So she was with…

MARCUS : Philippe.

PHOEBE : …for thousands of years. It must have broken her heart when he died.

MARCUS : Yeah.

PHOEBE : And what about you? You’re hundreds of years old. You must’ve lost lots of human friends.

MARCUS : Your lives are short. Most of us try and move on from place to place, every few decades. Create new identities, make new connections. It’s easier that way.

PHOEBE : Well…Turns out vampires make amazing hot chocolate. So… What else should I know?
