John Savage, né le 25 août 1949 à Old Bethpage à New York aux USA, est un acteur et producteur américain.

Enfance

Son nom de naissance est John Smeallie Youngs. Il a étudié l'art de la comédie dans la prestigieuse académie "American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City".

Carrière

Son premier succès dans le métier arrive 5 ans après ses débuts. En 1978 avec The Deer Hunter/Voyage au bout de l'enfer. L'année suivante, en 1979, il rencontre à nouveau le succès, en interprétant l'un de ses rôles les plus marquant, Claude dans le film Hair de Milos Forman.

En 1988, l'acteur quitte Hollywood et s'installe en Afrique du Sud, où il participe activement au mouvement contre l'apartheid en collaboration avec Nelson Mandela. En 1992, il participe comme directeur de production de Malcolm X, le film de Spike Lee.
En 1994, il retourne vivre aux Etats Unis. Jusqu'à la fin des années 90, John Savage continue de jouer dans de nombreux films.

Vers les années 2000, on le voit plus souvent sur le petit écran et notamment dans Dark Angel, où il obtient le rôle de Lydecker, un personnage important de la saison 1.
Entre 2003 et 2005, il apparaît également dans plusieurs épisodes d'une série de la chaîne HBO, Carnivàle, où il incarne un autre personnage clef, celui d'Henry 'Hack' Scudder.

Vie privée

Il est en couple avec Sandi Schultz depuis 1993.
